The savage beauty of Bartok's later compositional style is especially notable in the String Quartet No. 4. Experimenting with tonality, as in this quartet, he often succeeded in stretching the Western understanding of what is "tonal." Though not directly influenced by folk music like some of his earlier works, the inspiration of the "peasant" music of Eastern Europe can be heard in his use of unconventional scales and intervals such as quarter-tones. His fascination with arch structure is clear in this piece as well, with the first movement bearing resemblance to (and providing thematic material for) the final movement, bringing it all together.
